Step 1: Needs Assessment

We engaged with key stakeholders, including the Director of Sport, Exercise, and Health, and the Performance Sport Manager, to understand the current concussion management systems.

Through interviews, surveys, and focus groups with student athletes, we gathered insights into their unique needs and experiences. This comprehensive assessment allowed us to craft bespoke recommendations for improving their existing concussion support.

Step 2: Training

We conducted training sessions focusing on knowledge surrounding sport-related concussions, gender differences, and effectively navigating The Concussion Toolkit.

  • Coaches: 26th April

  • Club Captains: Trailblazers Programme 8th May

Step 3: Protocol Alignment

Step 4: Preseason Workshops and Toolkit Launch

Hands joining representing accountability and moving on in your recovery progress

We developed a tailored UoB toolkit featuring:

  • Clear, step-by-step protocol pulling together University wide resources

  • Integration of the Concussion Toolkit into UoB's digital platforms

  • Extenuating circumstances QR and other useful links

  • Student Health Service signposting

  • Relatable comments for UoB student life

This toolkit has been integrated at the University’s Student Health Service, Bristol SU, and uploaded to the Student Hub.

We delivered a concussion safety workshop at Captains Day, covering essential topics such as recognizing concussion, return-to-learn and play protocols, and, most importantly, how they as role model can foster and create supportive club cultures.

Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with 100% of attendees reporting they now feel they could confidently navigate concussion recovery.

In conjunction with this workshop, we officially launched the Concussion Toolkit on the UOB Active App, ensuring that all students and staff can access vital information whenever needed.

Step 5: Additional Infographics

In collaboration with UoB’s Sports Nutrition team, we are developing a ‘Concussion and Nutrition’ infographic based on currently emerging research.

Step 6: Continued Awareness

Levelling the Playing Field

We plan to set up awareness stands at various events, offering rewards for downloading the Toolkit:

  • Freshers fair

  • Pop-up outside Senate House

  • Big BUCS Wednesdays & Derby Days

Additionally, we will be sending termly emails to all sports society members to keep the community informed and engaged.
