Inspired by emerging research suggesting women may experience more severe and longer-lasting symptomology following sports-related concussions, the team here at the Concussion Toolkit Consultancy are on a mission to make concussion support more inclusive and accessible.

We are happy to say that over the past few months we have gained overwhelming support for our initiatives, having successfully pitched for £8,000 in social impact funding at the Runway Awards in April. This validation from such renowned private equity and impact investors at the University of Bristol’s funding event has allowed us to develop exciting connections with new universities, research collaborators, and potential brand ambassadors. We can’t wait to see what the future has in store!

Excitingly, these efforts have also been recognised by many local papers! Ongoing media coverage has been devoted to exposing the serious impact of sports-related head impact collisions, for example reporting on the litigation of 269 players against UK governing bodies for failing to protect them from brain injuries during their playing careers. It has been truly exciting to contribute to these calls for action and we hope our efforts are also able to build growing awareness surrounding a currently underrepresented issue – the necessity for gender-informed concussion support across all levels of play.
A lot of work still needs to be done to establish equity in sports medicine, given 80% of current concussion research remains focused on men. However, we have already begun to see first-hand the positive impact our services and Toolkit have had on women at the University of Bristol, with a member of the Football team revealing that "if I had this [toolkit] at the beginning of the year, it would have changed my life!". Similarly, as expressed in the article below, "To have so many people share their own concussion or recovery stories after our pitch was special. […] We believe providing inclusive recovery protocol which centres the individual is a mission that really resonates with people."
